How do you introduce yourself? How do you describe your role in life?
I used to have a hard time with this. I used to be very career-focused and made sure to introduce myself as a writer first and mama second. Then, the roles reversed. I became mostly a mama and sort of a writer when my year-apart twins were little.
I realized that this was a hard thing for me. People would ask me, “Do you work or stay home?” I did both. And I was sure to say, “I stay home, but I still work some.”
You’re a Professional Mother
I felt like most people considered me a mom with a hobby, not a professional. I mostly took care of my kids, but for a good portion of my week, I did still help professionals and companies with their communications. So, I adopted a new title – “professional mother.”
Now, I don’t put this on my resume. I don’t put it on my LinkedIn profile, but I do use the title in conversation and explain that it’s possible to be a mom and a professional at home.
I also think stay-at-home mothers are just as valuable as those who work inside or outside the home. This mama thing is WORK and we’re doing something great. So, be proud of that job title. It comes with an eternal reward.
You’re More Than “Just” a Mama
It’s easy to get bogged down in the “just” mentality when you take time to raise your family. If you want to start a business or a job at home, you’ll need to shake that off. You’ll also need to treat yourself as a professional.
You need a library of professional communications:
- Business card
- Letter templates
- Social profiles that showcase your professional work (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.)
Why does a mama who simply wants to earn a little extra money need all this?
I feel like even full-time professional mamas neglect this part of their career.
You have all.the.things to do. And it’s hard to communicate your own value. It’s hard to talk about yourself. Many of us don’t have much confidence in our worth.
Well, we’re going to change that.
You are a mama. You are a professional. And we’re going to make you look like it.
