Starting a Business at Home: 5 Honest Questions to Get You Started

5 honest questions to get you started wahmAre you ready to start this WAHM thing? A little secret is I didn’t really develop a hardcore business plan when I started my freelance writing and marketing business.

Don’t forget to KISS (Keep it simple, sister) your plan

I can get bogged down in planning and never get something off the ground. I had a sketch of what I wanted to do and what I was good at, but that was it. I like to jump in headfirst to projects, but being a mama has taught me a little planning is a good thing. Just don’t overthink it.

Start with a brain dump

If I could go back 12 years and tell my younger self a secret, I’d tell her to start with a simple plan. I’m developing some more formal planning tools for you to work through as you plan your work-at-home strategy, but the best way to get into the mindset of planning is to get the details out of your head.

Keep a planning tool with you at all times

I have a simple notebook from Walmart with colored page edges that I use to get out of my own head. One section of it is ideas for what I want to do with my business – blog posts, marketing opportunities, things I want to try or learn more about.

It’s purse-sized so I keep it in my briefcase with my laptop or in my big ole mama purse. When I have a few minutes, I jot down notes.

I do this while waiting for coffee to brew, as I’m dressing (I do a lot of shower brainstorming) or when my kids fall asleep for those few blissful minutes in the driveway.

Here are five questions I ask just about anyone wanting to do this home-working mama thing:

  1. What profitable skills do you have?
  2. What can you do to increase my skills?
  3. Why do you want to work at home?
  4. What are you willing to compromise to make time for work?
  5. What is your natural response to failure?

Notice I didn’t include anything about the income I need to make. You’re in the dreaming stages right now; not the practical. We’ll get there, I promise.

I’ll write more on these questions over the next couple of weeks to help you flesh out your big plan. Be bold and courageous, my friends!
